The .308 Winchester is an excellent cartridge, but that hasn't stopped wildcatters from attempting to improve upon it over the years in various ways. The .243 Winchester and 7mm-08 Remington are the two most common examples of cartridges developed by necking down the .308 Winchester to shoot smaller diameter bullets.
